FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX
15 YEAR OLD ALEX IS IN THE DOCK; ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF TORCHING A CAR; CHARGED WITH ARSON; GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY; YOU DECIDE…
"Flight of the Phoenix" is an interactive courtroom drama, surrounding the trial of a 15 year-old who has been charged with arson. Young people play the different roles within the trial, and upon hearing the evidence must decide whether the defendant is guilty or not. If found guilty they must decide on appropriate sentencing.
"Flight of the Phoenix" will initially be delivered FREE of charge in schools across the County as part of the Key Stage 3 Citizenship Curriculum, due to the funding that has been recieved from Cornwall's Youth Offending Service. Flight of the Phoenix has now been delivered in Fowey and Callington Community Colleges and the feedback from the sessions has been extremely good from both young people and teachers, with all of the teachers involved rating the service as “excellent”.
* 92% of young people thought that "Flight Of The Phoenix" was effective in communicating the seriousness of arson.
Although the drama will be fun and engaging, the aim of the project is to communicate to young people the hard hitting message that arson is a crime that holds consequences.
Quote:-
The Dreadnought “Flight Of The Phoenix” project was run for the first time in Liskeard School this year. The project focuses on arson through role play. The project has been a real success on a number of levels. Firstly the students totally bought in to the role play exercise and really were immersed in all aspects of the programme this has made the learning and understanding of the seriousness of the crime all the more easier. The activities were really well planned and resourced, this led to a lesson that had pace, content and a reality that students could easily grasp. All members of the team were professional, highly focussed and organised. They adapted well to the unique set up of our school day and were flexible enough to accommodate our needs. I would definitely recommend this service and look forward to working with them in the future. Teacher -Liskeard School

It is Dreadnought's hope however that this piece of work may be rolled out to other groups of young people in due course
