SPLAT CLUB

Dreadnought in partnership with Cornwall Council Disabled Children Short Breaks Grant is offering an exciting opportunity for children who have a diagnosis of ADHD / ADD and their Parents to engage in group work.

The young people meet once a week to have fun and engage in creative projects. They use play to develop appropriate social skills, confidence and self esteem.

Within the session we all take part in an exercise about a specific issue and some of the areas we have already covered are sharing negotiating and taking turns. We have use play to explore feelings, facial expressions and body language and also personal space.

The young people have been able to explore their own feelings about their ADHD diagnosis, and how some of them take medication and therefore feel different to their peers.

Every sixth week Parents attend a session without their young person and we talk through what has taken place over the recent weeks. Parents have used most of this time for peer support and discussions about strategies for behaviour.

Comments from young people are:

“The sessions are cool and wicked”

“It is time for me where I am accepted”

“It’s fun and exciting”

Comments from Parents are:

“My child is less stressed at home”

It is the one thing my child looks forward to”

“My child feels they have something just for them at long last”

“It is helpful to meet with other parents as they know how I feel”

“My child is able to move into main stream lessons”

The Dreadnought “Flight Of The Phoenix” project was run for the first time in Liskeard School this year. The project focuses on arson through role play. The project has been a real success on a number of levels. Firstly the students totally bought in to the role play exercise and really were immersed in all aspects of the programme this has made the learning and understanding of the seriousness of the crime all the more easier. The activities were really well planned and resourced, this led to a lesson that had pace, content and a reality that students could easily grasp. All members of the team were professional, highly focussed and organised. They adapted well to the unique set up of our school day and were flexible enough to accommodate our needs. I would definitely recommend this service and look forward to working with them in the future.  - Teacher, Liskeard School

Phoenix Courtroom Drama -" A really interesting way to help students understand the severity of this type of crime" - Teacher, School

Very much appreciate your on going support and the work you do with our students. - Teacher, Camborne Science & Community College

A young person said at his school review he was enjoying his Dreadnought sessions. He was very positive about (not just a grunt!) and his mum says he's a bit more relaxed since he started. Thank you. - Social Worker, Community Support Team

The sessions have been significant in helping the girls through these last few months.- Social Worker, Children Schools & Families

I would just like to thank you and the team at Dreadnought for taking the time to show myself and my colleques around. We were both amazed with the amount of children that you manage to support and the variety of different ways you can help individual children with their individual needs. I can already see the positive benifits that the Dreadnought Centre is having on this young person after only three sessions, which is a credit to you and all the team. Thanks again for showing us around, we have both been very inspired.- Tregolls School

Parents

A huge "Thank You" for supporting my daughter through a very difficult and challenging time in her life. When she was referred to you, our relationship was at rock bottom, we barley spoke and I could see no way forward and feared the worst for her. Her attitudes to life have changed completely, her anger has gone, she is doing well in school and we now have a better relationship than ever. I am hopeful that even though her time with you is over, she will remain positive and happy. Thank you again.

Thanks for making time for closure with my daughter. She told me that she enjoyed working with you and is sad that your time together has ended. I'm glad it was such a positive experience for her. Thank You.

I feel that Dreadnought has helped our son so much we are hoping it will do the same for our daughter.

It has been great seeing him so happy to attend the Aspires group where he likes the staff and what they do.

We are delighted our son is very happy, what more could we ask.

He is really enjoying going to Aspires, it's something he looks forward to each week. He likes that it's only a small group, with lots of workers (that are nice) to talk to. Thank you for all the help that you give.

Through all our work with children and young people we operate within a child centred philosophy. This means that we will always adhere to the child / young persons agenda and not our own. We are keen to enable our service users to experience their feelings and to understand them and then, hopefully, through a process of informed supported choice, enable them to take control and make the changes they want. Dreadnought undertakes work with children & young people who are experiencing emotional and behavioural problems in their lives. This includes those children & young people who are adopting an ever decreasing profile and in danger of disappearing ‘off the radar’ as well as those who have a high profile. The list below is not exhaustive but  gives an overview of the support we can provide for children and young people aged 8 – 19 years.

The service you require may not be listed here but the probability is that in our 35 years experience we have worked with most emotional and behavioural issues facing young people, so please ask us.

What About Us

Dreadnought (in partnership with Cornwall Council) is offering an exciting opportunity to the siblings of disabled children. Cornwall Council have identified through research and consultation that the siblings of disabled children would like to have fun, be creative, meet up with peers, help each other carry the burden and be listened to.

Dreadnought is running a project called ‘What About Us?

What About Us? will be in the Bodmin area on an outreach starting September 2011.  We are offering a peer group aged 8 – 12 years of non disabled siblings of disabled children who will meet for fun creative days during term time. WHAT ABOUT US FLYER

What About Us? Will bring together a group of peers who are in a similar situation to have fun and be creative in a safe and supportive environment.  They will be able to socialise and receive support to begin to understand that they are not the only ones in similar situations and begin to have a greater understanding of what their situation means to them.  In line with Dreadnought’s ethos and philosophy, all children and young people in the group will be unconditionally accepted and listened to and will have trained positive adults to whom they can talk to if they wish.

The aim of ‘What About Us?’ is to provide the siblings of disabled children with an opportunity to be the focus of attention and above all have fun!

There is no charge for ‘What About Us?’ but, places are limited.
