      FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX

15 YEAR OLD ALEX IS IN THE DOCK; ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF TORCHING A CAR; CHARGED WITH ARSON; GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY; YOU DECIDE…

"Flight of the Phoenix" is an interactive courtroom drama, surrounding the trial of a 15 year-old who has been charged with arson. Young people play the different roles within the trial, and upon hearing the evidence must decide whether the defendant is guilty or not. If found guilty they must decide on appropriate sentencing.

"Flight of the Phoenix" will initially be delivered FREE of charge in schools across the County as part of the Key Stage 3 Citizenship Curriculum, due to the funding that has been recieved from Cornwall's Youth Offending Service. Flight of the Phoenix has now been delivered in Fowey and Callington Community Colleges and the feedback from the sessions has been extremely good from both young people and teachers, with all of the teachers involved rating the service as “excellent”.

              * 92% of young people thought that "Flight Of The Phoenix" was effective in communicating the seriousness of arson.

Although the drama will be fun and engaging, the aim of the project is to communicate to young people the hard hitting message that arson is a crime that holds consequences.

Quote:-

The Dreadnought “Flight Of The Phoenix” project was run for the first time in Liskeard School this year. The project focuses on arson through role play. The project has been a real success on a number of levels. Firstly the students totally bought in to the role play exercise and really were immersed in all aspects of the programme this has made the learning and understanding of the seriousness of the crime all the more easier. The activities were really well planned and resourced, this led to a lesson that had pace, content and a reality that students could easily grasp. All members of the team were professional, highly focussed and organised. They adapted well to the unique set up of our school day and were flexible enough to accommodate our needs. I would definitely recommend this service and look forward to working with them in the future. Teacher -Liskeard School

Domestic Violence and Abuse

THE DREADNOUGHT CENTRE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAMME

Dreadnought makes a positive difference in these children and young people’s lives.   (P6; 1.7)

The Dreadnought Centre’s Domestic Violence and Abuse programme has been independently evaluated by Sue Penna Associates and Perfect Moment.

The full report is available by following this link …The Dreadnought Centre- an assessment of the impact of the DV&A programme

Below are some comments and observations made :

  • “Dreadnought, therefore, not only appears to be effective but especially so in the areas in which children need most help.” (P46)

  • “The young people looked at in this study …are some of the most vulnerable children and young people in our society”.  (P6; 1.7)

  • “External observers see difficult behaviour that needs to be better managed whereas Dreadnought see’s an individual who needs to be understood”.  (P19)

  • “The abnormal is normal for those who experience nothing else”.(P22)

  • “Dreadnought provides a ‘safe’ space for children and young people to work through issues”.  (P28)

  • “Dreadnought seems to afford these children and young people valuable recuperation time by providing support, protected ‘time-out’ from the abusive domestic situation”.  (P28)

  • “Many Young People coming to Dreadnought are specifically lacking in emotional literacy…Dreadnought intervention seems to have a significant role in importing emotional literacy”.  (P38)  “Dreadnought has specifically helped children and young people identify behaviours that do not help them”.  “Young people left Dreadnought equipped with an understanding of the concept” (of coping strategies). (P18)

  • “Dreadnought works in the real world and progress is by no means certain, steady or quick”.  (P18)
  • “That Dreadnought intervention works in ameliorating the behaviour of children and young people is well evidenced”.  (P25)

Dreadnoughts programmes are available for children, young people, teenagers and women who have experienced Domestic Violence.

The programmes have been designed to work with children, young people and women in a safe environment, where they can express themselves within a group or one to one setting.

The programmes will enable participants to understand more about themselves and the world around them.

They gain a better understanding of relationships, society and their rights and responsibilities.

Every person undertaking the programme learns how to put a safety plan together and to recognise potential risks and to keep themselves safe.

Dreadnoughts Domestic Violence programmes enable us to work with people who are living with, or have lived with, Domestic Violence.DV leaflet

The aims of the programme are:

To give people a safe place to talk, clear information, and support them in making informed choices.

To stay safe. By putting an action plan together and discouraging them from placing themselves in potentially harmful situations.

Bring about the changes they want for themselves now and in the future.

A chance to become responsible adults and to make a positive contribution to the society they live in.

Dreadnought recognises the possible support needs of children and young people in connection with the issues that may arise as a result of the programme, and further support can be offered through our Centre and outreach venues.

Aspires Juniors

Aspires Juniors is a  County wide project, based on the Aspires model, but for young people aged 7 – 12 years.

Funded by Aiming Higher for disabled children – Short Breaks, we are currently running Aspires Juniors groups in Redruth, St. Austell and Liskeard.

Like Aspires, the aims of the project are to develop and improve social skills, improve confidence and self esteem, to have fun and positive experiences and to promote social inclusion.

Young people initially join an evening group, which is held during the term time. We also run a summer activities programme during the school holidays. And, as with Aspires, when  young people are ready to move on from the group, we will help and support them to access community based social activities.

Young people need to be aged 7 – 12, have a definite diagnosis of ASC and be realistically able to meet the aims and objectives of the project. (Aspires Juniors is therefore most appropriate for young people who are high functioning.)

If you would like more information or are interested in making a referral, please contact Joanne Mann on (01209) 218764 or at jo@thedreadnought.co.uk

Autism Spectrum Programme = Inclusion, Recreation, Enjoyment and Socialising

Why would young people want to join this group?
Because it’ll be fun!  Young people will be mixing and socialising with other young people like themselves.  Aspires leaflet

Who is the group for?
ASPIRES is for young people aged 13 – 17 years who have a definite diagnosis of an autism spectrum condition.  Young people need to be in mainstream education, although this includes specialist provision in mainstream schools, Education out of school, home tutored and Pencalenick School, Truro.

Where is it all happening?
Aspires groups are held in Launceston, Bodmin, St. Austell,  Redruth and Penzance.

What is it all about?
To begin with – young people will join a weekly evening group held at a Centre.  The aim of the group is to make friends, develop social skills and confidence, to try new things, but most importantly . . .  to have fun!

When young people are ready, we will help them link into community activities.  Young people will choose an activity that they would like to do, they will have an ASPIRES worker accompany them to provide support until they are confident and comfortable enough to attend alone.  In the past, young people have chosen:- archery, dance classes, youth clubs, bowling etc.

We also run a series of holiday activities during the school holidays.  As a group, the young people choose the activities they want to do.  We have undertaken activities such as:- cycling the Camel trail, bowling, horse-riding, rock climbing, Minack Theatre etc.

What activities are available  at the Centres?
